harkin applauds $469,694 department of labor grant to assist 60 iowans affected by layoffs

Washington, DC – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today applauded a decision by the Unites States Department of Labor to award a $469,694 grant to assist Marshalltown-area workers affected by layoffs at ACE Precision Castings, LLC and Lennox Industries Inc.

“Iowans are the hardest working, most productive workers in the country, and this grant is a wise investment in their future,” Harkin said today. “Losing a job is never easy, and I am glad that this funding will be available as they transition into new careers.”

Last summer, both companies closed down their Marshalltown facilities and began a process of layoffs. ACE Precision Castings, LLC relocated their production facilities to China, and Lennox Industries Inc. is moving its Merit Cooling line to Mexico. The grant is aimed at helping the 60 affected workers access services and training that will help them re-enter the job force in growing regional industries.

Today’s grant will be awarded to Iowa Workforce Development and will be operated by the Iowa Valley Community College District.  This grant will be funded by resources made available for National Emergency Grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
